The NSW Government is offering financial support to businesses, including rideshare and food delivery drivers who have been impacted by the recent COVID-19 restrictions. Determining your eligibility is mainly based on your annual turnover.

COVID-19 Business Grant

The information below is from the Services NSW website:

If you’re annual turnover is over $75,000, you may be eligible for a one-off grant of $7,500, $10,500 or $15,000.

Eligibility: 

  • You must have an active Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Demonstrate your business was operating in NSW as at 1 June 2021
  • Your annual turnover was above $75,000 for the year ended 30 June 2020
  • You have business costs for which there is no other government support available. Business costs include – car rental such as Splend, mobile phone and so on.

Three different grant amounts are available depending on the decline in turnover experienced over a minimum 2-week period from 26 June 2021 to 17 July 2021, compared to the same period in 2019:  (If you weren’t operating in 2019 may still be eligible, but you will need a letter from an accountant to support your claim)

  • $7,500 for a decline of 30% or more
  • $10,500 for a decline of 50% or more
  • $15,000 for a decline of 70% or more.

What you need:

  • a MyServiceNSW Account
  • your proof of identity
  • a valid ABN with ANZSIC Code “4623 Taxi and Other Road Transport”
  • your business banking details for payment
  • Australian income tax return or Notice of Assessment. If you haven’t lodged yours already, GET STARTED NOW. 
  • qualified accountant, registered tax agent or registered BAS agent details. If you need a letter from Rideshare Tax to include in your application, you may request a letter HERE.

Evidence to support eligibility

  • declare that you meet the eligibility criteria
  • provide details of your qualified accountant, registered tax agent or registered BAS agent. You will require a letter from an accountant if you’re claiming a 70% decline. Contact Rideshare Tax if you need a letter.
  • submit an Australian income tax return, Notice of Assessment or other documentation demonstrating your rideshare business had an aggregated annual turnover above $75,000 for the year ended 30 June 2020. This is before all expenses including Uber’s service fees.
  • lodge other supporting documents as required to demonstrate you meet the eligibility criteria.

How to apply

  1. Log in, or create your MyServiceNSW Account.
  2. Select and verify your identity documents.
  3. Confirm your personal details.
  4. Enter your business details and answer the eligibility questions, then select ‘Next’.
  5. Provide information about your decline in turnover and upload your supporting documentation, then select ‘Next’.
  6. Enter your bank details, then select ‘Next’.
  7. Review your application and check the declaration boxes.
  8. Select ‘Submit’ to complete your application.

When you submit your application, you’ll receive a confirmation email with your application reference number. If you do not receive this email within 5 minutes after completing your application, please check your junk mail folder, and then call 13 77 88 if you’re still unable to locate the email.

After your application is received, it will be reviewed by Service NSW. They will contact you if they need additional information to support your application. If your application is approved, it will take approximately 5 business days to arrive in your bank account.

Q – My business wasn’t operating in June/July 2019 but I am earning over $75k, am I still eligible?

A – Yes. You will need your accountant to include this information in the letter and explain why a different period was chosen.

Q – My business wasn’t operating in the year ended of 30th June 2020 but I can prove I was earning over $75k, am I still eligible?

A – Yes. You will need your accountant to include this information in the letter and explain why. You will be required to submit other documentation to support your application such a Business Activity Statement (BAS).

Q – How can I work out which period to select in June/July 2019?

A – You have a few options. You can either capture this information in the Rideshare Tax App directly or email yourself a copy of your transactions from the Rideshare Tax App. Then you will be able to work out which would be the best fortnight to select.

Q – I need a letter from an accountant, can you help me?

A Yes. We’re offering a once-off service for all drivers in NSW, support with their COVID-19 Business Grant Application. COVID-19 Micro Business Grant

Rideshare drivers with an annual turnover between $30,000 and $75,000 could be eligible for fixed fortnightly payments of $1,000 if they can demonstrate a 30% decline in revenues across a two-week period between the dates of 26th June 2021 and 30th July 2021 compared to the same period in 2019.

Applications for Micro Business Grants are opening Monday 26th July 2021. Go to the Services NSW website to get started.

Eligibility criteria

  • You must have ABN as at 1st June 2021 registered in NSW.
  • You’ve experienced a decline in turnover of 30% or more over a 2-week period between 26th June and 30th July 2021, compared to the same period in 2019, within the Greater Sydney lockdown .
  • You’re annual turnover was between $30,000 and $75,000 for the year ended 30 June 2020.
  • You have business costs for which there is no other government support available.
  • You haven’t applied for the 2021 COVID-19 Business Grant.
  • If ridesharing is your part-time income and you’re also receiving an income from other employment or from the COVID-19 Disaster Payment, then you are not eligible for the Micro Business Grant.
  • If you received the $1,500 Small Business Fees and Charges Rebate you can apply for this Grant.
  • You can only submit one application per ABN.

Evidence Required

  • Evidence of a 30% or more decline in turnover will require one of the following:
    • letter from a qualified accountant, registered tax agent or registered BAS agent, or
    • business bank account statement (separate from any personal accounts).
  • Evidence your turnover is between $30,000 and $75,000 for the year ended 30 June 2020 will require one of the following:

    • business bank account statement; or
    • Australian income tax return or Notice of Assessment.
  • You will need to declare that you don’t earn any other income.

If you’re unable to provide evidence then you will not be eligible for the grant.

COVID-19 Disaster Payment
